The Creative "Righting" Center offers three options for persons interested in poetry therapy training: 1) The Residential Program for persons who can attend monthly peer groups in New York leading to certification and registration; 2) The Program for Distant Learners leading to certification and registration; 3) The Consultation Corner for persons who would like to attend peer groups and seminars or have one-to-one consultations, but are not working towards a credential.

Meetings are held one Sunday a month at The Creative “Righting” Center in New York City for regional learners, from September-June. The training group offers face-to-face contact and the support of a dynamic poetry therapy community. You are invited to join this warm circle of teachers, writers, therapists, librarians, pastors, and professional helpers. Each four-hour session consists of:

1. Facilitation of peer group led by the mentor/supervisor
2. Facilitation of peer group by trainees in rotation
3. Review of therapeutic material and techniques
4. Group Supervision

All learners at The Creative “Righting” Center have the following requirements:

  • Attend a seminar once a year for at least two years (regional CAPFS who attend peer group are not required to take the second seminar)
  • Facilitate one or more poetry therapy groups each week, and
  • Commit to one hour of supervision twice a month via phone with timely process recordings
  • Attend peer group whether in the regional or long distance program. (Long distancers will attain peer hours through attending seminars & NAPT Conferences.)

Note: Trainees have the option of participating in the innovative Poets-Behind-Bars Program, and attaining group supervision by phone at a reduced rate. Partial scholarships, based on need, are available for Poetry Therapy: Toward Self-Knowledge. The Rosalie Brown scholarship is available for qualifying 2nd year trainees.
