Your Professional Practice: Renewing Credentials

JUMP TO:

ANNUAL MAINTENANCE FEES

It is the professional responsibility of every NFBPT credential holder to keep his/her credentials current through the payment of annual maintenance fees for the CAPF, CPT or the PTR. NFBPT’s credential maintenance fees should not be confused with NAPT membership dues or license renewals paid by the credential holder to any national, state or other professional organization. Late fees will be charged for any credential renewed after July 31 of the renewal year. (Credentials are renewable in even-numbered calendar years:  2012, 2014, 2016, etc.).

NOTE: If you do not renew, your current credential will become inactive on Aug 1 of the current renewal cycle (See Definition of Good Standing). Renewals delinquent beyond October 31 of the current renewal year will be reinstated subject to current Federation policies.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

All NFBPT credential holders are expected to continue their education and build on their level of experience.  Beginning with the 2012 credential renewal cycle, all credential holders must complete 20 hours of continuing education credit for each 2 year renewal period (10 CE credits per year). Continuing education credits may be earned in biblio/poetry therapy theory and practice, counseling theory and practice, human growth and development, social/cultural development, research/program evaluation, professional development and practice management. It is acceptable to use CE credits which you have obtained for another license or credential, assuming the credits earned are relevant to poetry therapy. Mentor/Supervisors who have already accrued CE credits for the M/S renewal will not be required to earn additional hours.

Complete documentation is required for all continuing education. Documentation may include transcripts, certificates of attendance, signed verification forms for attendances at conferences, etc. Please download the following documents for complete information on CE requirements:

All required documentation should be placed in your personal Continuing Education File and retained for at least one renewal cycle beyond the cycle for which credit is claimed. DO NOT send proof of attendance or verification documents with your renewal application unless you have been specifically asked to provide them. A random 10% of all renewals will be selected for audit. If you are selected for audit you will be required to produce your documentation.

The Federation has established the following criteria to satisfy the requirement for continuing education:

  • Attending workshops, conferences, seminars
  • Taking relevant college/university courses (such as poetry, therapy, literature)
  • Presenting at national or professional conferences
  • Receiving supervision from an NFB/PT mentor/supervisor
  • Professional publication activities( for example, about poetry therapy, clinical studies, literature)
  • Research activity relevant to biblio/poetry therapy—including independent reading of recent books and articles
  • Advocacy/Leadership (includes participation on NFB/PT board, NAPT board, and related committee activity)

In addition, as part of the continuing education hours, each credential holder must document completion of ONE Ethics and Record Keeping course every four years (minimum equivalent of 3 CECs/3 contact hours). Such courses are available online or through local community colleges.

Other Requirements

All CPT and PTR credential holders are required to submit proof of licensure valid for the state in which they practice. A photocopy of current license is sufficient.

DEFINITION OF GOOD STANDING

GOOD STANDING: Your NFBPT credential is in good standing if you pay your biennial renewal fee on time and you fulfill current NFBPT requirements for renewal (10 hours of continuing education per year/20 hours of continuing education per renewal cycle).

NOT IN GOOD STANDING: You are NOT in good standing if your certification/registration date has not expired AND you have received a notice of a late fee due to non-payment of your biennial fees.

LAPSED: Your credential is LAPSED if your certification/registration has expired AND your biennial fees are overdue by 6 months or more. If your credentials lapse, your name will be removed from the NFBPT directory of credentialed professionals until you are approved for reinstatement.

REINSTATEMENT OF CREDENTIALS

Reinstatement information for Credentials Not in Good Standing
NFBPT credential holders whose credentials have not lapsed but are not in good standing due to non-payment of biennial fees may simply download and complete the Credential Renewal Form and Continuing Education Tracking Form and pay the biennial fee and the related late fee. Please send a copy of the "Late Fee/Credential Renewal Reminder Letter" that you received with the appropriate fee payment. You can also choose to pay online at our ONLINE PAYMENT PAGE.

Reinstatement Information for Lapsed NFBPT Credentials
You do NOT have to reapply for credentialing* in order to reinstate your NFBPT certification or registration(s). However, you must pay all past due fees and associated late fees before your credential can be reinstated. You may contact the NFBPT administrator to determine the exact amount of any past due fees and late fees owed. You must include proof of 10 hours annually of continuing education in biblio/poetry therapy and/or related courses with your payment.

*If you received your CPT in 2006 or earlier AND do not have a current license in a mental health profession issued by the state in which you practice, you will NOT be able to reinstate your CPT credential. You may request reinstatement at the CAPF level.

Instructions for Reinstatement for Lapsed NFBPT Credentials

  • Contact admin@nfbpt.com to obtain a Reinstatement Application.
  • Pay the required fees (past due fees and late fees plus any related reinstatement fees).
  • Attach copies of continuing education documents. You must document 10 hours of continuing education for every year since your last credential renewal date.

If you are in compliance with all current NFBPT requirements for credentialing your credential may be reinstated.
This policy applies to all NFBPT credentials, to NFBPT endorsed credentials, and to status as an approved Mentor/Supervisor.

MENTOR/SUPERVISOR RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS

By July 31 of odd-numbered years, NFBPT Approved Mentor/Supervisors must provide:

1. A copy of the signed Adverse Action and Code of Ethics Statement. Click here to download a copy of this agreement.

2. Documentation of your current CPT/CAPF/PTR credential.

3. Documentation of liability insurance coverage. We strongly urge, but do not require, mentor/supervisors to have liability insurance coverage for their supervision, and to indicate whether or not they have such insurance coverage, either through a professional liability policy or through a homeowner’s or renter’s umbrella coverage.

4. Submission of a completed Training Curriculum Questionnaire that meets NFB/PT training requirements in all areas of training as well as core competencies.

5. M/S $100.00 credential renewal fees. Such fees are specific to M/Ss, and are in addition to the PTR/CPT/CAPF renewal fees. The renewal fee of $50 per year is payable every 2 years. With the fee, you are asked to submit the necessary paperwork for recertification as a mentor/supervisor. Click here to pay your $100.00 renewal online>>

6. Documentation of completion of a Federation board-approved ethics course:
At least 4 hours of an approved ethics course will be required every 4 years.
If you are in a discipline or located in a jurisdiction that requires an ethics course for license renewal (e.g., licensed psychologists, LCSWs, and MFTs in California, or licensed social workers in Maryland, DC, or Virginia) you can submit evidence of license renewal at the frequency specified by your discipline and jurisdiction, and will not have to take an additional ethics course for M/S renewal.

7. Documentation of completion of an approved course in supervision, either in poetry therapy or in a professional field specific to the M/S:
At least 4 hours of an approved supervision course will be required every 4 years.
This requirement can be met by your having attended the supervision workshop at the April 2008 NAPT Conference, or by documentation of study of the recording of this supervision workshop available for purchase through the NFBPT website, or by attending and documenting another supervision workshop or course acceptable to the Federation. We anticipate offering supervision courses at future Annual NAPT Conferences.

If your profession requires a supervision course to maintain licensure, you can submit such evidence and will not have to take an additional supervision course for M/S renewal.

8. Documentation of continuing education in poetry therapy, or pertinent training, curriculum, or adult education:
At least 30 hours of continuing education are required every 2 years. The total hours can include the ethics and supervision courses. Up to ten hours of this requirement can be satisfied by annotations based on independent study. Participation in the Mentor/Supervisor Support Circles will also satisfy some of these hours.
Continuing education credit is available for any topic that would also qualify as didactic hours for trainees (e.g., continuing education in therapy, poetry therapy, other creative arts therapies, creativity, poetry, literature, etc.). This can be accomplished through documented independent study or attendance at workshops, conferences, classes, or online courses. To document self-study work, please submit a 2-3 page annotation that summarizes the information and outlines your opinion of the most significant learnings of the work.

Please send the documentation to:
